Changing strings.

Nearly everyone can get strings onto a guitar. Far fewer get them on in a way that actually holds tune, and the difference is almost entirely in how the string is wound onto the post. Here is the whole job, including the parts that get skipped.

The short version

If your guitar will not stay in tune after a string change, the string is almost never the problem

It is one of three things: the winding on the post is slipping, the string is binding in the nut slot, or you have not seated the string properly yet. All three are free to fix and none of them require buying anything.

The steel itself does not stretch in any meaningful way once it is up to pitch. What moves is everything around it, and a good string change is really just the business of taking that slack out before you start playing rather than discovering it two songs into a set.

All at once, or one at a time?

This is the first argument you will run into, and the common advice is wrong.

Taking all six strings off will not damage your neck

A neck that cannot survive an hour without string tension has something seriously wrong with it. Every guitar in a repair shop gets fully unstrung as a matter of routine, for cleaning, fret levelling, and setup work. It is completely normal and it does no harm.

The neck will relax slightly while they are off and settle back once you are up to pitch. That is not damage, that is wood behaving like wood.

So take them all off, because it gives you access to the fretboard and hardware that you will not get otherwise, and that access is where the real value in a string change lives.

The one genuine exception is a floating tremolo. On a Floyd Rose or any bridge balanced between string tension and springs, removing all the strings lets the bridge tip forward and you spend a long time bringing it back into balance. There, changing one string at a time really is easier, and it is a practical convenience rather than a structural rule.

Getting them off

Detune before you cut. Cutting a string at full tension releases a large amount of energy instantly, sends a sharp end flying, and can mark your finish or your face. Slacken it off first, then cut if you want to. It takes seconds.

Some people insist on never cutting at all and unwinding fully. It makes no difference to the guitar. Cut them if you like, once the tension is off.

While the board is bare, which is the point

This is the part most people skip, and it is the reason to change strings properly rather than quickly.

Clean the fretboard

What builds up on a board is skin, sweat and dust, and it accumulates right up against the frets where your fingers cannot reach. A cloth and a little elbow grease gets most of it. For the stubborn buildup along the fret edges, a plastic scraper or an old credit card edge works without scratching anything.

If you use steel wool, cover your pickups first

Fine steel wool cleans a board beautifully and it also produces thousands of tiny steel fibres. Your pickups are magnets. Those fibres will stick to them permanently and they are miserable to remove. Mask the pickups with tape before you start, or use a non steel alternative and avoid the problem entirely.

Oil, but far less often than you think

Unfinished boards, rosewood and ebony mostly, benefit from occasional conditioning. The mistake is doing it every single string change because it feels like maintenance.

Over oiling is a real thing. It softens the wood over time and can work into the fret slots, which is exactly where you do not want a lubricant. A couple of times a year is plenty for most people, and only if the board actually looks dry and pale rather than because it is on your checklist.

A finished maple board needs no oil at all. It is sealed. Wipe it and move on. Oiling a lacquered board does nothing except leave residue.

Check the things you can only reach now

Putting them on, and this is the bit that matters

The goal is a small number of neat wraps, each one sitting below the last, going down the post toward the headstock face.

How much slack to leave

Too little and you cannot get enough wraps. Too much and you get a tangled pile that slips. A reliable method is to pull the string taut through the post, then pull back a couple of inches of slack before you start winding. Another common approach is to measure to two or three tuners past the one you are fitting.

Wind downward, and keep them tidy

Each wrap should sit under the previous one, working down the post toward the headstock. This matters for a specific reason: it increases the break angle, the angle at which the string leaves the nut and heads for the post. A steeper angle keeps the string pressed firmly into its nut slot, and a string that is firmly seated does not rattle, jump out, or wander in pitch.

Wraps that climb upward, or cross over each other in a heap, do the opposite. They reduce the angle and they slip under tension, which shows up as a string that goes flat every time you play hard.

The self locking wrap, which costs nothing and fixes most slipping

Thread the string through the post. Bring the tail around and pass it under the length going to the nut, then bring it back over the top and pinch it. Now wind. What you have made is a simple lock where the string traps its own tail against the post.

It takes two seconds and it is the single most effective thing you can do for tuning stability on a standard tuner. Once you have done it a few times you will not go back.

Keep tension on the string while you wind. A finger pressing it into the post as you turn is what produces tight, even wraps instead of loose ones that take up slack later, on stage, in front of people.

Cut the ends, properly

Trim close to the post once you are at pitch. Leaving long tails is not just untidy, those ends are sharp enough to draw blood and they buzz against things. Cut them flush and, if you want to be thorough, bend the stub down flat.

Seating them, which is not stretching

You will be told to stretch your strings, and you should do the thing being described, but the name is misleading and the reason people give for it is usually wrong.

You are not stretching steel, you are removing slack

A guitar string at pitch is nowhere near the tension needed to permanently stretch the wire. What is actually happening is that the wraps at the post are tightening, the ball end is seating properly at the bridge, and the string is settling into its nut slot. All of that slack has to come out sometime. You can take it out deliberately in two minutes, or it can come out gradually while you are trying to play.

Method: pull each string gently upward away from the fretboard along its length, retune, repeat. Three or four rounds and it will stop going flat. Gentle is the operative word. You are seating hardware, not testing breaking strain.

The nut, and the ping you have been ignoring

That little metallic ping when you bend a note or use the tremolo is a string binding in the nut slot and then suddenly releasing. It is also why the guitar comes back sharp or flat after a bend.

The string needs to slide through that slot freely. When it grips instead, tension builds on one side of the nut and releases in a jump.

The pencil trick

Rub a graphite pencil into each nut slot before you fit the string. Graphite is a dry lubricant and it is exactly what is needed. Purpose made nut lubricants exist and work well, but a soft pencil you already own does the job for most players.

If the binding persists after lubrication, the slot is too narrow or badly shaped for that gauge, and that is a filing job rather than a lubrication job.

If you changed gauge, you changed the setup

A gauge change is not a string change

Different gauge means different tension, and tension is what the whole instrument is balanced against. Go up or down and you have changed the neck relief, your intonation is now wrong, a floating tremolo is out of balance, and the nut slots may no longer fit the string properly.

This is why a guitar sometimes plays badly after new strings and people blame the strings. Nothing is broken, the setup simply no longer matches what is on it. There is a full walkthrough in the setup guide and the intonation guide.

Stick to one gauge and your guitar stays set up. Switch around constantly and you are signing up for a setup every time.

The myths, straight

"Never take all the strings off"

Covered above, and it is simply not true. Repair shops do it every day.

"Boiling old strings brings them back"

It removes some of the gunk trapped in the windings and buys you a very short lived improvement in brightness. What it does not do is undo the metal fatigue, the corrosion, or the uneven wear where the frets have been digging in, and those are what actually killed the string. It also weakens them. Not worth the pot.

"Expensive strings last much longer"

Coated strings genuinely do last longer for most people, because the coating keeps sweat and skin out of the windings, and that is a real mechanism rather than marketing. Uncoated strings at different price points mostly differ in consistency and feel rather than lifespan. Buy on how they feel and sound to you, not on the assumption that more expensive means longer lived.

"You should change strings every X weeks"

There is no universal number and anybody giving you one is guessing. Body chemistry varies enormously. Some players kill a set in a week through sweat alone, others go months. Play time matters too, obviously.

Judge by the strings, not the calendar. Change them when they sound dull and lifeless, when they will not hold tune, when they feel gritty under your fingers, when the windings look discoloured or flattened where they meet the frets, or when your intonation starts drifting for no other reason.

"Wiping your strings down is a waste of time"

This one is worth doing, and it is the highest return habit in this whole page. A quick wipe along the strings after playing removes the sweat and skin that corrodes them from the outside and clogs the windings from below. It genuinely extends string life, it costs you ten seconds, and it works.

"Locking tuners fix tuning problems"

They remove the wraps from the equation, which eliminates one source of slipping and makes changes faster. That is worth having. But if your tuning problem is the nut binding, a poorly cut nut, or a tremolo that is not balanced, locking tuners will not touch it. They solve one specific cause, not tuning instability in general.

The last step people skip

Tune it, play it hard for a couple of minutes, tune it again. Then do it once more. New strings settle, and the settling happens fastest under actual playing rather than sitting on a stand.

Do that and the set will be stable by the time you actually need it, which is the entire point of doing any of this properly.
