Fret the note, then check
A string reads sharp the instant you press too hard. Tune with the same touch you play with, and check the tuning again after a hard strum — new strings especially will drift for the first hour.
Always tune upward
Come to pitch from below. If the note is sharp, drop it well under and bring it back up. That takes the slack out of the post and the slop out of the tuner gears, so it holds.
Cents, not decimals
A cent is a hundredth of a semitone. Under three cents is imperceptible on a single note; a five-cent error between two strings is a chord that sounds sour. Chase the needle, not the frequency.
