Build an Electric Guitar

A guitar is not a collection of unrelated woodworking jobs. Design controls geometry, geometry controls hardware, the neck controls playability, and the finish cannot hide poor preparation.

Design it at full size

Resolve scale length, neck angle, bridge position, pickup space, access, and hardware before cutting the first useful piece of wood.

Choose material for the job

Select wood and glue for stability, structure, workability, and the part being made—not because a species has a better legend.

Build the body accurately

Establish centerlines, reference faces, cavities, neck fit, contours, and veneer without letting decorative work move the geometry.

Treat the neck as the instrument

The truss rod, fretboard, profile, fret slots, fretwork, and neck joint decide whether the finished object plays like a guitar.

Step 5

Prepare before finishing

Color and clear magnify the surface underneath them. Work through sealing, leveling, spraying, curing, and polishing in the right order.

Wire the signal path

Understand pickups, controls, grounding, shielding, switching, and the output instead of copying a diagram you cannot diagnose.

Make the parts become an instrument

Install the hardware, string it, set relief and action, cut the nut correctly, level the frets if needed, and intonate it last.
